Every day, in homes across the country, children quietly step into roles many adults could never imagine. Beyond being students or siblings, they are interpreters, advocates and lifelines — bridging linguistic and cultural divides for their families.

Emmy-award-winning director Rudy Valdez surfaces these untold stories in his documentary “Translators,” set for a community screening at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23, at Pacific University’s Taylor Meade Auditorium.

Presented by the Forest Grove/Cornelius Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by U.S. Bank, the Tribeca Film Festival-winning short chronicles the lives of Densel, Harye and Virginia — three of the estimated 11 million children in the United States who serve as interpreters for their families.


The film illuminates the experiences of young ones who, navigating adult conversations and shouldering critical decisions, offer a poignant testament to resilience and highlight the need to support immigrant families in communities.

“This film tells a story that resonates deeply with so many families in our community — stories of courage, sacrifice and hope,” Claudia Yakos, executive director of the Forest Grove/Cornelius Chamber of Commerce, said in a release. “By coming together to watch ‘Translators,’ we’re honoring the voices of these children while also reminding ourselves of the importance of building a supportive and inclusive community.”

After the screening, attendees are invited to take part in a panel conversation to delve deeper into the film’s themes and explore ways to break down cultural barriers on a local front.

The screening is free and open for all, but registration is required due to capacity limitations.
